Matraca BergWell here we are. 14 years later. This is my blog. It’s a new century, a post 9/11 world, the kids (stepkids) are grown men, I’ve been married 17 years, we have lost family members, we have gained some, alot of pain and joy, alot of caregiving and life tending and ultimately, letting go… and now I am typing up this “blog.” Wow, it has been a long time… alot has happened. No wonder I felt the need to make this record. There was too much to say and not enough recording artists to help me. So here it is. My life filleted and laid out for all to see. eeks. This is what we do I suppose. Otherwise we are just writing jingles, and I guess that happens and it is an enterprise in it’s own right.

On tour, I look forward to finding like-souls. I think I will. While touring the UK with Gretchen Peters and Suzy Bogguss, there were so many… it did my heart good. Looking forward to this …um, I hate to say journey. It can sound so eeewww… but, you know what I mean.

  1. It’s truly an honor to be the first to comment on your new blog. I was an instant fan back in the Spring of 1990, when the music video “Baby, Walk On” appeared on CMT. You have remained close to my heart ever since as one of my favorite singers.

Yes, it’s been too long and the World is much better now that you’ve given us a new album! THE DREAMING FIELDS is truly a masterpiece, and I think everyone is going to be blown away by it’s beauty, conviction, and strength.

It’s going to be wonderful seeing you on your own tour finally. I’m very excited to be attending the first stop this weekend! It has been too long…

Please keep the door open this time – you have so many songs for us to hear. Don’t give them all away – you can sing them better yourself! Today, it’s easier than ever to release your own albums.

I’m doing my best to spread the word about THE DREAMING FIELDS and hope everyone else does the same. It deserves to be heard and receive even more critical acclaim than SUNDAY MORNING TO SATURDAY NIGHT.

Thanks for sharing your gifts with us.

    All my love,

    Kevin D.

    Hi Matraca,

Saturday night’s show in Columbus was wonderful! I too am a long time fan…you are a musical gem. The new cd is great! Good luck in the UK!

    Peggy

P.S. Hope you come back to Columbus!

  3. Angel Roeder says:

Just “discovered” you from a review on No Depression – can’t believe I’m just now hearing about you. Immediately bought/downloaded your CD and LOVE it!! Can’t stop listening to it.

Immediately looked for tour information – I’m so bummed you are mainly playing in the UK over the summer. I hope when you get back you will do some shows on the East Coast.

Best of luck and thank you for sharing your beautiful music.

  4. Rick says:

Thank you for the music, the songs, the stories. This new record is simply beautiful.

  5. Pär Owen says:

You write such fantastic songs and tell such beautiful stories – and always have. I’m so glad you put out this fine record. Please try to come play in Stockholm!

    Matraca,

So glad you’ve put out another album, it’s been way too long! Your fans have been dying in the wilderness waiting for your return! I’m of course ordering a copy as we speak.

I remember many years ago you were on Nashville Now (I’ve saved the videotape, ha), your 2nd album “Bittersweet Surrender” was about to be released. I think you played 3 songs from it that night, my first cousin Addison was even in the audience and got to ask you a question. Loved the songs you played that night, then was saddened to learn the record company would not release the album.

My question: do you now own the master tapes to it, and could we die-hard fans get a copy from you? We’re willing to pay the big bucks, ha.

Come to Richmond, VA, on your tour, we’d love to see you!

    Much love,
    Rokin Robin of Locksley

  7. Clyde says:

I’m pleased to see you “back in the saddle”. :-)

The Dreaming Fields is a terrific album and I’m sure you will be much loved at your shows!

  8. Amy says:

I can hardly wait to get this CD! You are such a lovely, talented individual. I have told so many people about you and your work. Plus, I think your name is just as lovely as you are.

  9. Neets Crane says:

    Hi,
I look forward to your show in Park City in July. I love the songs you write, and the guitar you play is wonderful. I just took up the guitar myself, 2 years ago and I’m 69 years old…How on earth did I live so long without it, I don’t know. I love to play and write songs on my Martin D18 Authentic. I also have a Martin 1993 D28, (1935 special). Both have that deep bass I love so much – the vibrations sooth my heart, and lately my heart has needed that.

I just recently discovered Gretchen Peters (I’m a fan of Tom Russell), and have met Suzy Bogguss here in Park City a couple of times. I’ve pre-ordered the Wine, Women and Song DVD. The three of you performing together is such a wonderful mix. Thank you so much.

I look forward to your show in Park City, at Zooms.
    Keep up the excellent work.
    Neets

    Hi Matraca
Enjoyed seeing you in Columbus. Thank you for allowing Ryan (my son )& Emily to open for you. I know he was really looking forward to meeting you. He has been a long time fan. I have been enjoying your new record. It is beautiful. Just saw NGDB last Sat nite in Kent, Ohio. Awesome show. Spoke a minute with Jeff. Hope you get a chance to listen to Ryans new music. He is currently working in Nashville with Brian Harrison. He too is a very good songwriter. Best of luck with your new tour.

  11. Diane Sparkles says:

I just pre-ordered the new album and can’t wait to get it! Just last week I shared your Lying to the Moon album with a friend of mine. I think it is one of the best records ever…the songs are beautiful and the flow is just right. From what I heard on line it sounds like your new album is the same way. Yay!

I also just saw that you are coming to the Birchmere. I’m so excited. I’ve always wanted to see you live. You have a beautiful voice and are so talented. I’m glad to see you recording and touring.

I hope the success of your UK tour will lead to a US tour for the three of you. That would be so awesome!

I wish you all the best!!

  12. Gina says:

Ppl like you get all the brains. I just get to say thanks for he asnewr.

  13. Val says:

Matraca, I saw you two years ago in Manchester, when you toured with Wine Women and Song in the UK and I couldn’t wait for your return. It was great to be able to see the performance this year – so good that I had to see it twice!(And I feel privileged).

You have a wonderful, wonderful gift, thanks for sharing it. Seeing you perform Dreaming Fields live will be one of my lifetime memories.

I got your new album today – sensational, it deserves to become a classic. It’s already up there for me as an all time favourite. Just going to look for your back catalogue…..

    Good Luck

  14. Laurel says:

    Hi Matraca,
I heard you on the NPR interview and right away, I had to have your album. My best friend’s husband lost his son this year and “South of Heaven” makes me cry every time.

  15. Ian says:

Saw you play in England as “wine, women and song”. Great evening of relaxed music making and conversational interraction. Love the album, its really a great piece of work. Keep it up and hope to see you play again.
    All the best

  16. Chantel says:

    Matraca
I have been a fan for many years and I even named my daughter after your name. We get very many compliments on the name and I have to ask the origin or history of your name.
    All the best.

    Chantel

  17. Cora says:

Thank you for bringing your beautiful voice back to us. I have all of your previous songs on cassette……too much technology has changed…,glad you are back!!!!

  18. William West says:

Like so many others, I’ve loved your voice since “Baby Walk On” and am still listening to you today. I can’t understand why you aren’t being played on radio. The main reason I am writing is to ask if there is any way to get the tracks from your unreleased album “Bittersweet Surrender” out to the fans. Perhaps a download store here on your website? I would also be interested in an album of “uncovers” – your version of songs you have written that others have released.

  19. Gretchen says:

You were great last night in Wilmington and you definitely made two new fans in my husband and me. Thanks so much for sharing your music with us!

  20. steph says:

Hello! My husband and I just caught your show with Marc Cohn in Annapolis, MD. I remember listening to your music in the 90’s in a time of big changes& growing up (which i’m still working on!?) Anyway, I was so happy to see you back! Your set was great, although not long enough! I am from the midwest, so your stories of your grandparents farm were especially touching. Best wishes with the new album, we love it!

  21. Victor says:

    Hello from Spain!

I used to be a fan of your music as a songwriter and of course as a singer in the 90’s.

Maybe you are one of the few artists from that time, whose records I listen again and again.

I enjoy playing guitar along with you too!

Surfing Spotify, I have been pleased and susprised by your new and amazing record: The Dreaming Fields that is going to become one of my favourites.

    Best wishes and much love!

  22. Ed Brown says:

Hi Matraca – I just got the new album today. After the 3rd time thru I realized how much I’ve missed your songs and your voice. The album is absolutely beautiful. Heartbreaking in some places, edgy and cool in others. Classic Matraca Berg. We sure miss you and the shows at the Swallow. You were always great. All the best to you.

  23. Hello There. I found your blog using msn. This is a very well written article. I’ll make sure to bookmark it and return to read more of your useful information. Thanks for the post. I will definitely comeback.

  24. Steve Harrison says:

Must be something in the air, or fate… or possibly gas. :o] By a round-about way yesterday evening I discovered your new album, listened to and enjoyed “You And Tequila” and instantly placed an order for three of your CDs. Then walked into the living room where wife was watching the CMT Awards show; started to tell her about your new album and there was Kenny and Grace just firing up “You And Tequila.” Wow! Talk about things coming together. So, back to your web site and discovered you’re going to be in Charleston, WV on 4 Dec. Immediately popped for tickets online. It was a jam-packed Matraca evening. Love your music, hon. Keep it up forever.

  25. Terrance Hill says:

Hi Matraca. I guess you could say I’m a neophyte when it comes to your wonder music and song writing skills. I discovered “The Dreaming Fields” by accident on Amazon.com. Out of curiosity, I played through the sample songs and really liked them. I clicked the MP3 download in Wish List and it set there for six months or longer. I kept going back to it, but just didn’t pull the trigger to download it. Finally, last week I was cleaning out my Wish List and decided to listen to some of your songs on YouTube. Strawberry Wine was my first listen. Within 5 minutes I had downloaded The Dreaming Fields. I spent an entire weekend playing around in the YouTube universe listening and watching Matraca Berg videos. I’m a now a fan. As a poet/writer myself I see a ton of similarities in you lyrical arrangements and some of my own work.Like Steve Harrison, I live in Charleston, WV. I missed you in 2011, maybe I’ll catch up with you in 2012 someplace. Best to you and your family……Terrance Hill

  26. Steve Jones says:

Curious – I was so taken with your new album that I started exploring…. and found “Lying to the Moon…” album, which I really enjoy but there seems to be a discrepancy. It shows 12 songs, not 11 and is missing “Back in the Saddle”. It has a wonderful song in the 11th slot called “It’s Easy to Tell”. It’s not in the liner notes anywhere and I found the title through a lyrics search. Don’t see that song on the 4 albums listed on your website either.

Anyway, you have a new fan! Glad I finally discovered you!

    Steve

  27. Patrick says:

I am a new fan. I saw the ad in American Songwriter magazine, Checked out the samples on your site, and immediately downloaded The Dreaming Fields. I live near Nashville, and hope to catch a local performance soon. Hopefully the 8th and 23rd are not the only dates you will have in the near future. Keep up the excellent work!

  28. June Hoskin says:

    Hi ,
I am I hope one such fan that finds and feels the heart in your songs. When I saw you Gretchen and Suzy at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds UK ( April 11) it was a wonderful concert but confirmed when I listened over and over to the Dreaming Fields that there is something unique ans special about when you sing your songs.I love the honesty, the stripped down feel because you are writing from the heart .
Gretchen is playing Cambridge Folk Festival in July , I saw her on her UK tour in Dublin at Whelans and it was great. But I want to see you here in Cambridge too !!!! Looking forard to your next album ,:)

  29. David Kressig says:

    Hi Matraca,
I’m a long standing fan from Southern Africa and am looking forward to catching your gig in London in November. I was fortunate enough to be at your Wine, Women and Song gig but am looking forward to a solo gig.
A quick question – as mentioned by others – any chance of getting your unreleased ‘ Bittersweet Surrender’album released or perhaps an acoustic version including other songs given away as well? You could market it from your site!We need more of your glorious songs and voice!
I wish you the very best for the upcoming tour.Best wishes to you and your family.
